Post-Ebola survivors hit by brain health issues - study

A majority of Ebola survivors suffer some form of long-term brain health problems, according to a new study.

Patients who were successfully treated for the disease were found to have neurological issues six months later.

The most common problems included muscle pain, headaches, memory loss and depressed moods, but in rare cases patients were suicidal, the US researchers said.

How youth triumphed in the disaster ebola

Two years after the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, Kamanda Kamara, committee member youth advisers Plan International Sierra Leone, published on his blog about the participation of people in the battle to contain the virus and how their work has contributed to change in communities. "It is important to continue working and investing funds in structural reforms to strengthen health systems," said Concha Lopez, CEO of Plan International Spain.

During the outbreak of ebola I saw many people infected and even die in my community. I thought it was, somehow, help save my community and end this terrible disease.

Low-cost portable device that can detect Ebola

Researchers have developed a low-cost and portable diagnostic device that can be used to detect Ebola infection and many other diseases. The device could be particularly useful to monitor endemic, epidemic and pandemic disease outbreaks in resource-limited developing countries that need portable diagnostic equipment that functions outside the hospital.

Ebola crisis provides framework for responding to outbreaks like Zika virus

As world leaders grapple with containing the Zika virus, the Ebola epidemic in West Africa provides valuable lessons for how to respond to other infectious disease epidemics, according to a policy report published by researchers at Princeton University and the Wellcome Trust.

Rebuilding local health care infrastructures, improving capacity to respond more quickly to outbreaks and considering multiple perspectives across disciplines during decision-making processes are among the key recommendations the authors propose.

Isolation of potent neutralizing antibodies from a survivor of the 2014 Ebola virus outbreak

Antibodies targeting the Ebola virus surface glycoprotein (EBOV GP) are implicated in protection against lethal disease, but the characteristics of the human antibody response to EBOV GP remain poorly understood. We isolated and characterized 349 GP-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from the peripheral B cells of a convalescent donor who survived the 2014 EBOV Zaire outbreak. Remarkably, 77% of the mAbs neutralize live EBOV, and several mAbs exhibit unprecedented potency. Structures of selected mAbs in complex with GP reveal a site of vulnerability located in the GP stalk region proximal to the viral membrane. Neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) targeting this site show potent therapeutic efficacy against lethal EBOV challenge in mice. The results provide a framework for the design of new EBOV vaccine candidates and immunotherapies.

Treating Ebola with Plasma

During the Ebola outbreak of 1995 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, eight patients with Ebola were given blood transfusions from people who had recently recovered from Ebola. Seven of them survived.

The blood of people who have recently recovered from an infection contains antibodies that the body develops naturally to fight that infection. The transfusion of these antibodies into infected individuals (as whole blood, plasma, or concentrated antibodies) has a long history and has been proposed as a possible treatment for Ebola virus disease.
