UB Startup Uses Sunshine to Clean Dirty Water for Disasters, Poor Nations

Distilling water using the sun’s rays . . . a University at Buffalo startup has found a quick way to do it . . . and it could transform how potable water gets to people in developing countries or in areas stricken by natural disasters like earthquakes or hurricanes.

The university’s Sunny Clean Water startup said its method is nearly three times as fast as the industry standard . . .

The process uses a floating solar still and a specially-engineered carbon-based cloth to capture, desalinate and purify as much as a liter of water every three hours in a prototype developed by UB associate professor of electrical engineering Qiaoqiang Gan, Singer and other university electrical engineering students.

China to Provide 1000 Bore-Holes at Cost of $12m for Ghana

China is to provide 1,000 bore-holes for Ghanaians in five out of the 10 administrative Regions at a cost of $12.0 million.

An agreement to that effect was signed between the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong and Minister for Finance, Seth Terkper.

Ms Sun said the project would help to reduce water borne diseases, support women and children and help improve conditions for industry and businesses.

Some 85.1% of Ghanaians Do Not Have Access to Toilets – WaterAid

Dr Afia Zakiya, Country Director, WaterAid Ghana on Thursday indicated that 85.1 per cent of people in the country do not have access to safe and private toilets as they resort to large household toilet usage.

She explained that out of the 85.1 per cent; 60 per cent of the people are without toilets and shared toilets, while six per cent resort to unimproved toilets with 19 per cent engaging in open defecation, which compromise their dignity.

Dr Zakiya said this during the celebration of the annual World Toilet Day, which also saw WaterAid Ghana organize a mock parliament session for some pupils from public schools in Accra on the theme: “Toilet and Nutrition – We Can’t Wait”.
